Some local organizations received thousands of dollars Wednesday from the New York State Office of Unclaimed Funds.

UTICA, N.Y. – Some local organizations received thousands of dollars Wednesday from the New York State Office of Unclaimed Funds, which has more than $17 billion in lost money yet to be claimed to its rightful owners.
Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon was joined by New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli in Utica and Rome Wednesday to present checks to various groups, including:
- Mohawk Valley Community Action — $3,385
- City of Rome — $2,948
- Utica City School District — $2,533
- Rescue Mission of Utica — $1,196
- Frankfort Center Fire Department — $1,000
- Rome Rescue Mission — $1,000
- Oriskany Hills Golf Club — $843
- Rome Catholic School — $771
- Thomas R. Proctor High School — $603
- Utica Bike Rescue — $500
- Community Foodbank of Greater Utica — $292
- Floyd Volunteer Fire Department — $277
- N.A. Walbran Elementary School — $244
- Oriskany Jr./Sr. High School — $150
DiNapoli says the unclaimed funds are usually between $50 and $100, and can come from multiple places like banks or insurance companies.
“Well very often, it’s an old bank account that somebody might have had and very often, we’re a mobile society, people move, you don’t let the bank know what your new address is, they can’t find you,” said DiNapoli. “It could be a check, often a health insurance check that wasn’t cashed, and again, the check kind of ends up in limbo. Could be an old stock account.”
Last year alone, DiNapoli’s office answered 570,000 claims which returned $400 million in lost funds to New York residents.
