Utica, N.Y. – The 10th annual ‘Walk a Mile in My Shoes’ event put on by the Rescue Mission of Utica went virtual here in 2021 due to COVID, and since the turnout has not been a good as hoped thus far, the mission is extending the event through March 15th.
The virtual version originally was supposed to run through the entire month of February, beginning on the first day of the month and ending today, on the 28th, but Rescue Mission of Utica Operations Manager Ernie Talerico says the turnout so far has not brought in a lot of funding to help the mission so he’s hoping people will register in these next two weeks to walk and help the cause, “We know the nicer weather is coming up, people have been inside, so we ask people to get outside, walk in parks, walk in your neighborhood, do whatever you can to get outside and raise awareness for homelessness and hunger. You can also do it while you’re in the gym or on your treadmill. Videotape yourself or have pictures and then send them into us.”
The event usually held on the first Saturday in February raises awareness about homelessness and hunger and gives walkers a little bit of a feel of what it might be like to be homeless and wandering the streets during the cold winter.
The virtual event allows walkers to do their one mile walk whenever and wherever they want.

The donation per individual walker is $25, for a team or group of ten or more, $15 per person.
The Registration includes a goodie bag.
Prizes will be awarded in late March to the team with the largest number of participants and with the most funds raised.
Talerico says all of the money raised stays local and helps people right here in Utica through the mission’s shelter and food pantry and he says every dollar helps, “We look forward to next year when we can all get back together, but this year obviously we have to do it in a virtual style.”
