UTICA, N.Y. – The Utica Jr. Comets stopped by the Rescue Mission of Utica Monday to deliver more than 250 donated turkeys for those in need ahead of Thanksgiving holiday.
The turkeys were purchased by the Save of the Day Foundation, using donations from Don’s Ford and George Murad.
Players from the NCDC junior team and the 16-U Jr. Comets helped unload cars full of turkeys before they were distributed to families.
“It’s actually a little bit more fulfilling for me this year to kind of hand off watching these young kids do what the professionals do. You know they’re all 16 – 20 years old, so I think it’s a big step in kind of building community leaders,” said Rob Esche, president of the Utica Comets.
The turkeys donated by the hockey teams are expected to feed about 1,000 people this Thanksgiving.
