UTICA, N.Y. —This Christmas is unlike anything we’ve experienced before. Families using technology to connect with each other or hosting gatherings smaller than normal. But what hasn’t changed this year is the love and generosity that our community displays during the holiday season. Rescue Missions across the country are needed now more than ever, and that was clear on Christmas Day in Utica.
Dozens of volunteers making about a thousand meals for those in need in our community. The kitchen was operating at full steam ahead as volunteers packed the meals one by one.
“All of our volunteers do a great job. We genuinely have consistent volunteers each year. So they just know where to go, what to do, and they just do an amazing job,” said Executive Director Wendy, Goetz.
The dining room, which is normally filled with people, served as a secondary prep kitchen. Volunteers said they miss seeing their normal customers coming through the door.
“You know you get used to seeing certain people. I haven’t seen some people in a while and you think about them and worry about them,” said Donna Mccray.
The meals came with ham, a side dish, and a mask. Volunteers said they served walk-ins and made deliveries all day. Volunteers hope to welcome back people into the dining room in 2021.
