The Utica Comets hockey team donated 300 turkeys to the Utica Rescue Mission on Monday ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.

UTICA, N.Y. – The Utica Comets hockey team donated 300 turkeys to the Utica Rescue Mission on Monday ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.

The team also donated other items, like potatoes and apples to go with the holiday meal.

This is a tradition the team has been participating in for seven years, and Comets President Rob Esche says the members are happy to give back to the community that supports their sports program so vigorously.

“I think as an athlete, you always appreciate what you can do for a community. We’re pretty lucky to play a sport for a living, so whenever it comes to asking the players to lend a helping hand or to get involved, it’s always been an easy process and I think that’s the beauty of our sport and it’s the athletes have always been great,” said Rob Esche, president of the Utica Comets.

The Comets partnered with Chanatry’s and Esche’s Save of the Day Foundation to buy the donated food.
