June 16, 2020

The Rescue Mission of Utica is taking applications for its Small Home Project, and is planning to choose an eligible, low-income person or family to win a new house.

UTICA, N.Y. – The Rescue Mission of Utica is taking applications for its Small Home Project, and is planning to choose an eligible, low-income person or family to win a new house.

Members of the Rescue Mission’s Skills for Success Program constructed the home, which is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2020.

The Skills for Success Program was created in 2015, to help students, unemployed people and those with low incomes learn construction trade skills.

It is a two-semester program in partnership with Mohawk Valley Community College, OnPoint for College, Working Solutions and the City of Utica.

Local professionals help the students learn the trades, including carpentry and electric.

“This is a win, win, because not only are we looking at gifting this to an individual or small family, we are also looking at training individuals. And that’s really how it evolved into training individuals in the trades, which we know there’s a big need,” said Ernie Talerico, director of operations at the Rescue Mission.

The income eligibility criteria to apply is below:

  • One-person household: Yearly household income must be between $22,000 and $37,000
  • Two-person household: Yearly household income must be between $28,000 and $43,000
  • Three-person household: Yearly household income must be between $31,000 and $49,000
  • Four-person Household: Yearly household income must be between $35,000 and $54,000
